Media Savvy Producers

Britain’s local media is reaching more people than ever across its print, online and broadcast platforms delivering local news to 40 million newspaper readers a week and 37 million web users a month. For any small business getting news stories in the local media is the most effective way of finding new customers.

The West Cornwall Farmers’ Market Project has been working with food businesses to show them how to create newsworthy stories which will be featured in the local media through a series of press release writing sessions.

Started in January 2010 to provide support, business development and training to farming families and small food businesses, the West Cornwall Farmers’ Market Project has so far provided training for 37 producers – and there are more events planned.

“For any small business getting their name in the local media as often as possible is essential,” explained Victoria Amran, Development Officer for the West Cornwall Farmers’ Market Project.

“The vast majority of these businesses cannot afford to pay for advertising but having an effective media strategy often means they get great coverage without it costing money they simply don’t have. Big businesses spend a fortune on press officers feeding stories out to the media on a daily basis – with this training we’ve given these local businesses the skills and confidence to contact the local media and shout about the fantastic produce they have on offer!”

In Britain almost 80% of people read a local or regional newspaper regularly – one of the highest in the world – and today more and more people are searching online for their news.

Naomi Gorvin, the organiser of the award winning Sennen Market and the owner of Samphire Food and Events, attended the press release writing session.

She added: “This kind of practical training is important for small businesses and market organisers. Knowing how to put a professional press release together is the first step towards getting taken seriously and getting the story featured in the paper, or on the radio or television.”
