The West Cornwall Farmers’ Market Project launched a huge advertising campaign last week which aims to attract a new crowd of customers to shop locally and support their community markets.

More than 5000 people in West Cornwall regularly use a farmers’ market each week, with numbers increasing hugely in the summer months. The WCFM Project is now working to attract local people who feel that shopping locally is to expensive or time consuming for them.

“We launched the advertising campaign on Pirate FM to attract other customers to the markets,” explained Victoria Amran, Development Officer for West Cornwall Farmers’ Markets.

“There are plenty of people out there who would like to buy quality food locally but who feel the farmers’ markets are too expensive for their budget. There are also a lot of people who simply feel constrained by time, work and family commitments. We want to let them know where and when their nearest market is and ask them to give it a go!”

“We all understand that people are feeling the pinch of prices going up at the moment – it’s the same for our farmers and fishermen who are seeing their profits tumble. The idea behind farmers’ markets is to support local businesses and help keep as much money circulating in the rural economy as possible. This in turn benefits other businesses.”

The advertising campaign has been funded by the West Cornwall Farmers’ Market Project – an innovative scheme funded by a grant from West Cornwall Local Action part of the Rural Development Programme for England, funded by the EU and Defra, and managed by the South West RDA.
