Bollowal Farm

Throughout Cornwall’s history, farming has played a major role in its economy, culture and landscape, with a high proportion of family run farms on small acreage taking advantage of the generous climate and longer growing season.

The farming industry has undergone massive changes in the last 20 years with increased industrialisation, reduced prices and outbreaks of disease like BSE and Foot and Mouth. Many smaller farms have had to close or diversify into tourism to survive.

Jeff and Pat Thomas are the fourth generation to farm at Bollowal with 300 acres stretching the coastline from Cape Cornwall to Nanquidno. Specialising in their pedigree herd of Ruby Red Devon cattle and quality unsprayed vegetables, the Thomas Family have made the decision to supply local shops and farmers’ markets rather than the supermarkets.

“There are only two ways to go in farming these days,” explained Jeff, who used to grow vegetables which he sold onto intermediaries supplying large supermarket chains.

“You either get bigger producing more and more food which you get paid less and less for, by supplying the supermarkets, or you do what we’ve done which is growing quality food full of taste on less land and sell direct to the public.”

Bollowal Farm is a regular stallholder at Sennen Farmers’ Market every Tuesday morning and Helston Farmers’ Market held on the first Saturday of every month.

Jeff added: “Supermarkets are only really interested in what your produce looks like – taste definitely comes second.  At farmers’ markets the producer gets the chance to explain how things have been grown and reared to the customer - the feedback we’ve had has been great.”

“We’ve taken the decision to farm for a niche, but growing market. People want to buy their meat and vegetables locally, and that means we’re helping to preserve the traditional culture of farming in this part of Cornwall for future generations. I think it works for both the producer and the consumer.”

Bollowal Farm supplies local shops and farmers’ markets as well as having a well stocked stall on the farm. For more information contact Jeff and Pat Thomas on 01736 788260.
