There has been a church in Stithians since the 6th century, but the oldest part of today’s building dates from the 14th century. Music has always been part of village life. St Stythians Male Voice Choir performs concerts throughout the UK and is one of the most successful male voice choirs in Cornwall. Stithians Ladies Choir was formed in 1966 and very quickly established a high reputation which remains today.
Stithians village is also known for its agricultural show which is one of the largest of its kind in the UK. Held annually in July, the show often attracts more than 20,000 people. Established in 1834, it has been held continuously except for three years during World War I, five during World War II and in 2001 there was no show due to the nationwide outbreak of foot and mouth disease. In 1992 the Agricultural Association purchased its own purpose built show site which now plays host to other shows and events throughout the year.
Stithians Produce Market is held on the third Saturday of every month in the village hall, next door to the school. The market attracts customers from the surrounding villages as well as from Stithians itself. The market itself was started as a way to support local food producers throughout the year and follows from the strong support in the village for local farmers and the agricultural community.
Attracting hundreds of people each month Stithians Produce Market has almost 20 stalls selling everything from bread, vegetables, cakes and sausages, to curries, samosas, herbs and pickles. There are also local craft stalls selling cards, clothes and jewellery.
“The village has a long history of working with farmers and supporting the rural community which surrounds the village. The Produce Market was started as a way of showing our support throughout the year by buying local food directly from the farmers and small businesses who grow and produce it.”
