ST LEVAN FARMERS' MARKET
First Monday of every month
10am until 12 noon
Methodist Wesleyan Chapel, Trethewey St Levan TR19 6LP
The tiny village of St Levan lies just 7 miles West of Penzance between Logan Rock and Lands End. The area is famed for its dramatic coastal scenery, picturesque coves, beaches and small harbours. The world famous Minnack Theatre sits high on the cliffs overlooking Porthcurno Beach, and draws in thousands of visitors to the area each year.
St Levan’s Stone sits in the small village church. The legend says that this stone was used by the saint as a seat. He is supposed to have split the stone in two with his staff and made a prophecy. According to St Levan a mounted and loaded pack horse could ride through the split rock and end the world.
St Levan Local Produce and Craft Market has been running since early 2010 and was started to bring very local food from small scale suppliers to people living in the village year round. Held on the first Monday of each month, the market has become a focal point for this isolated community.
Locally grown vegetables and pork, home baked cakes, bread, cheese, plants, chutneys and jams are all available, as well as some crafts. Run in conjunction with the chapel who provide tea and coffee, the market has become a popular social event in the village.
“St Levan is a small, isolated community and access to local food is limited despite being surrounded by some of the best farmers, fishermen and produce businesses in the UK! We decided to start this market as a co-operative and bring together as many products as possible each month.”
