PAUL FARMERS' MARKET

Every Wednesday

10am to 12noon

The Village Hall, Paul, Penzance, TR19 6UG.

The beautiful village of Paul is situated a mile inland from the fishing town of Mousehole near Penzance in West Cornwall. Dominated by the ancient Paul Church of St. Pol De Leon, the village was one of the communities along with Mousehole, Newlyn and Penzance destroyed in the Spanish raid of 1595 carried out by Carlos de Amesquita. The church was very badly damaged in the resulting fires and evidence can still be seen on masonry work within the building today.

Like most Cornish communities, Paul has its own village celebration. Paul Feast is held on the Sunday nearest 10 October every year. The village is decorated and civic service takes place led by the Mayor of Penzance. This celebration is an example of the Celtic practice of celebrating Allantide.

Paul Farmers’ Market was started two years ago because villagers wanted easy access to local food and producers. Held every Wednesday, the market is jointly run with the church and has become a social event in the village as well as a place to buy food and crafts.

Many of the small scale producers who sell at Paul Farmers’ Market are unique to this market and won’t be found at other farmers’ markets in West Cornwall. The market is a co-operative and sells on behalf of other producers who are unable to have a stall.

Local vegetables, savouries, jams, chutneys, relishes, juice, eggs, milk, flowers, cheese, cakes, lamb, pork, bread and other seasonal produce are all available.

“We work on the principle of bringing very local producers to the market and making it easy for the village to shop locally on a weekly basis. This is good for the rural economy and helps protect the beautiful farming landscape we have here in West Penwith, as well as reducing our dependence on supermarkets and food miles.”
